Guangdong LNG Project Phase I includes 14 separate but related projects. It comprises LNG Receiving and Re-gasification Terminal Project (Terminal and Trunk line project) and Trunk-line, 4 LNG power plant projects, 2 Hong Kong Gas Utilization Project, 1 Power Oil-to-gas Conversion project, 4 Town Gas Projects, LNG Transportation (shipping) Project and LNG ship Building Project.

The Terminal and Trunk-line project is the core3 project of Guangdong LNG project. It is one of the large scale foundamental energy facilities in Guangdong.

The Guangdong LNG Project is a pilot LNG project in China. It will bring tremendous changes for China's energy planning and future strategies.

Guangdong Province, particularly the Pearl River Delta, has seen some of the most spectacular economic growth in China over the last 20 years.

This economic development has been so rapid that it has outpaced available supplies of energy. Meanwhile, the region is home to both a large population and intensive industrial activity.

Air pollution in the region is severe and affects the health of local residents. Air pollution also causes acid rain that harms the soil and decreases fertility, influences the growth and output of plants and crops, thereby reducing the productivity of plants, vegetables and fruit trees.

Guangdong LNG Project will supply natural gas to a number of new and existing power plants, city gas grid companies, and industrial users to meet this increasing demand. Air quality is expected to greatly improved thanks to the project. Combustion of natural gas produced CO2 half less than coal combustion. It is also an effective way to prevent acid rain.

The North West Shelf Venture is the LNG supplier for the project. In 2004, the Plateau Annual Contract covers 25 years with a supply quantity of up to 3.7 million tons of LNG per year.
